14 January 1944: 2LT Walter M. Pickard's crew aboard B-17G 42-37965 "My Desire" (coded OR-U) of the 323rd Bomb Sq, 91st BG, flies low over Croisette, the site of another of "Hitler's secret construction projects," according to the squadron daily report. Both ship & crew would go down on the 3 March trip to Wilhelmshaven; flak damage forced them to ditch in the North Sea. All ten survived the ditching, but only one life raft was available - and this one only half-inflated. Pickard and four others survived.

5 November 1943: The 91st BG flew to Gelsenkirchen, but chances are this photo wasn't shot in flight. The unidentified bombardier wears an A-8B oxygen mask with the exhalation valve covers installed - a modification to try and alleviate the recurrent problem with freezing moisture in oxygen masks at high altitude. The problem wasn't fully solved until the advent of the A-13 pressure demand mask in the closing months of the war.
