29 January 1944: B-17G 42-39929 "Lackin' Shackin'" (coded LL-K) of the 401st Bomb Sq, 91st BG on her way to Frankfurt. Arriving at Bassingbourn 20 December 1943, the ship was assigned to 2LT Frank Ammann's crew. COL Stanley T. Wray (R) had served as the commander of the 91st Bomb Group up until late May 1943. Given command of the 306th BG, it is not surprising that he would "steal" some tried-and-true talent from among his prior assignments. Enter CAPT Edward D. Gaitley, who had previously served under Wray at Bassingbourn with the 324th Bomb Sq. He was placed in command of that squadron for a time after MAJ Harold Smelser was KIA 23 November 1942.
