- [3rd] Marine Division ([3rd] MarDiv). Photographer: Sergeant (Sgt) Mike Padilla. LZ DEFENSE -- Leathernecks of 2nd Battalion, Ninth Marines prepare to fire a 81 millimeter mortar to surpress enemy mortar fire while a Marine transport helicopter drops into their landing zone. The landing zone was the night position for the Marines as they conducted a search and clear mission southwest of Vandegrift Combat Base Aug 27.

These captioned, black & white photographs include scenes from combat and evacuation operations; and personalities such as President Ngo Dinh Diem, US presidents Johnson and Nixon, and personalities such as Walter Cronkite, Martha Raye, and Bob Hope. There are views of interactions between Marine Corps personnel and Vietnamese civilians. Also in this series are photos of Operation Homecoming, the return of American Marine prisoners of war to the United States.
