    • B-17F 42-5714 (coded OR-N), a "no name" Fortress of the 323rd Bomb Sq, 91st BG, was lost on the 14 October 1943 mission to Nancy with 2LT Robert M. Slane's crew. Most of them bailed out; tail gunner SGT Claud J. Smith was mortally wounded by enemy fighters and navigator 2LT Arthur G. Foster evaded capture. Slane belly-landed the ship, not knowing if Smith was still alive. Slane was captured; he and the remaining seven crewmen became POWs for the duration of the war.
