The Commission of Fine Arts was established in 1910 to guide the architectural development of the nation's capital on matters of design and aesthetics as they affect the Federal interest and preserve the dignity of the city. Photographs in this series go beyond DC and include cities like Boston and Chicago, as well as monuments, sculptures, and presidential portraits. Subjects and headings are very broad. Annotation added: Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood, and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watch-word be ordered and your beacon beauty.
