Mitt Romney is currently one of the front runners for the Republican nomination for President of the United States.  A lot of attention has been given to Mitt's religion thus far and has brought a lot of attention to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the LDS Church, also know as the Mormons) and how that affects his appeal as a candidate or his ability to govern.

George Romney for President

Mitt's father, George was governor of Michigan in the 60s and made a bid for the Republican nomination for President at the time.  I thought it would be interesting to look back and see what sort of attention that fact that he was LDS received at the time.  I looked at the Gazette Virginian and found a few articles about George and his run for the nomination. I didn't see any reference to his religion in the articles I found.

We've overcome or at least have worked to overcome many of the prejudices that have and do exist in our world including those that are gender based and race based. My question is, what does it say about our society that it appears that prejudices about a person's religion have become stronger in the last 40 years instead of disappearing?
