15 AUG 1802 Rev John Stanger married Eli McLaughlin and Mary Wampler a cousin of Rev Stanger's Wife Anna Magdalena Wampler Rev. John Stanger founded Zion Lutheran Church in 1790. The Rev. John Stanger was born in Kercheim, Germany on 10 June 1765, he attended the University of Tubigen majoring in Theology and in Medicine. He arrived in the spring of 1787 in Charleston, SC and moved with other Germans to Rowland Co. NC to minister to the German Lutherans there. In 1790 he received a call to organize a church among the German Lutherans in Wythe Co. Virginia. From 1791 to 1794 the services were held outside under a make shift pulpit between two trees until a log church was built in 1794. The trees are still standing today, although one of the trees acquired severe damage after hurricane Hugo in 1989. Rev. Stanger served as the minister until 1824 when he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates for four terms. He married Anna Magdalena Wampler on Christmas Day 1791 and had nine children. He died Oct 14, 1848 and is buried at this church.
