Documents from Custer's Court Martial

Sep 1867 | Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

In 1867 Custer faced a Court Marshall for various disciplinary issues.  He was found guilty and stripped of his rank and command for a year.

 This document is the first page of his 45 page written defense, which he introduces saying, "I have sought to compress it within the smallest possible compass and if it still seems long, it is because fewer words could not be employed to express what I believe to be a fair and temperate review of the evidence now before you."
