League of Nations dissolves after years of peacekeeping efforts.

Following more than twenty years of existence, on Apr. 18, 1946, the League of Nations was formally dissolved.  An initial idea of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, the League of Nations sought to promote global peace and cooperation, though was not sufficient enough to meet the needs of post World War Two Europe.  Several ideas and practices, however, were later adopted by the United Nations, formed just years after.

San Francisco Earthquake and Fire

At 5:12 A.M. on April 18, 1906, a massive earthquake shook San Francisco, California. The quake lasted less than a minute, but its consequences were devastating. In addition to the damage from the earthquake itself, several fires broke out around the city, destroying nearly 500 city blocks.
