" TAR-HEEL " Confederates in my Family Tree ( an on-going project )

My paternal family roots are in Western North Carolina in the counties of Alexander, Caldwell, and Wilkes. Several men from this area related either directly or " by marriage " to my Land family roots served in the Confederate Army during our nation's Civil War. The following is their story and a proud and important part of my heritage. - edited by Glenn Land

Created 24 Mar 2008

North Carolina did not secede until May 20, 1861, after the fall of Fort Sumter and the secession of the Upper South's bellwether State, Virginia. North Carolina was one of the last states to secede from the Union.

More than 125,000 Tar Heel males, young and old, served the Confederacy. Nearly half of these men were wounded at least once, and more than 40,000 of them died during the war-more than from any other Southern state. Back home, loyalties to the Confederacy or the Union divided many neighbors and communities. As the war progressed, civilians as well as soldiers faced increasing hardships. Why is North Carolina called the "Tar Heel State"?   Retreating Confederate soldiers left a column of North Carolinians to battle the enemy alone. Later, the North Carolinians met the fleeing troops and told them for the next battle we'll put tar on your heels to make them stick. Gen. Robert E. Lee, on hearing the story, reportedly exclaimed, "God bless the Tar Heel boys." The first Confederate casulaty of the Civil War was Pvt. Henry Waytt Co. A 1st N.C. Inf ( later became the 11th inf the " Bethel Regiment " ) killed in the first major land battle of the war at Big Bethel Church in Virginia. One of the mottos of North Carolina is " First at Bethel, Farthest at Gettysburg, Last at Appomattox."
