Joseph Smith marries Elizabeth Black PEC VA

| Prince Edward County, VA

The 1st born USA SMITH, May 1765, wed at age 28 to ELIZBETH BLACK of WYTHE COUNTY VIRGINIA, on Sunday, Dec. 19, 1793 in the Methodist Church Parish. The parents of Joseph, John L. and Mary, of Scottish ancestory, and Elizabeth's mother and father and two brothers, were witnesses. The union was the 1st for Joseph Smith and the second for Elizabeth, whose 1st husband died in the American Revolutionary War 1781 in Concord, Mass.

SMITH FAMILY MOVES WEST TO INDIANA

| Franklin, Johnson County, INDIANA

The 1st USA Smith family, moved west in 1828. The Smith's, father Joseph Sr; mother Elizabeth (Black) Smith; and 7 or their 9 living children, born 1795 to 1811 in Prince Edward and Gratson Counties, Virginia, moved to Franklin, Johnson County, Pleasant Township, INDIANA in late 1828. This Indiana move would be noted in the 1830 USA Indiana Census.  Included in the move and their dates of birth, were: Margaret (July 30, 1797); Mary (Aug. 12, 1799 VA); William G (Nov 2, 1803 VA); John (June 26, 1808 VA); Robert (June 26, 1808 VA twin of John); and David (March 5, 1811 VA). Two other children, including 1st born James (Sept 25 1795 VA) and 7th born Matthew (May 16, 1805 VA) who died at age 18 James (May 16, 1814 VA); and age 8 Matthew (Jan. 5, 1814 VA), respectively.

 

 

WILLIAM G. SMITH weds JANE CHENOWITH

| Franklin, Johnson County, INDIANA

William G (George) SMITH, the 5th born child of Joseph Smith Sr. and Elizabeth (Black) Smith, who were wed Dec. 19, 1793 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, was wed to Kentucky born JANE E. (?) CHENOWITH June 3, 1830 in Franklin, Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana.  The Smith's had moved to south central Indiana in 1828 from Grayson County Virginia. The new bride had moved with her family from Kentucky in 1829.   As an aside William G. and Jane would have 7 children from their union. William G. passed away Sept 19, 1878 in Indiana. No date of death of Jane or her children is known.  William G. was a brother of Robert Smith, who gave birth to 9 children with wives (1st) Eleanor McKinney March 6, 1834 in Indiana and (2nd) to Louisa Ellen Clem April 21, 1852 in Indiana. One of William G.'s brother Robert sons was WILLIAM T. SMITH, born Sept 26, 1837 in Indiana and would wed Nancy Emaline Gregg (Smith) Nov 22, 1864 (during the Civil War in which he fought for two years 1861 to 1863 with the 18th Indiana Volunteers. William T. was wounded and after healing from a hospital in St. Louis, MO, would honorably discharged and returned to live and continue working as a mason, and part-time Methodist-Episcopal Minister in Johnson County Indiana.  William T. would die at the young age of 46 in 1884 in Clinton County, Indiana.
