Compiled Service Records for North Carolina. David Neff joined the Thomas Legion of North Carolina. His Co was later transfered to Co. H of 1st Tennessee Cavalry (Carter's Cavalry), so the Compiled Service Records for Confederates who served in State of Tennessee are also utilized in this story.

David Neff, Capt. of Co. G of Thomas Legion, North Carolina Troops.

David appears on a company muster and descriptive roll fo the organization. Volunteeres or Mounted Riflemen enlisgted and mustered into the service of the Confederate States September 24, 1862 at Dandridge, Tennessee for local defense.

David was 53 years of age, 5'6 1/2" tall; dark complected with blue eyes and gray hair. He was a farmer who lived in Jefferson County, Tennessee. According to this record he was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia.

 He enlisted on 24 Sept 1862 by Capt. J.W. Terrell for 3 years or during the war.

Company G transferred to 1st (Carter's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry about November 1862 to become Company H.

David Neff, Capt. of Co C of 1st Tenn Cav appears on a descriptive roll of POW at Camp Chase, Ohio. He was arrested at Somerset, Ky on March 30, 1863.

He was received at Camp Chase, Ohio on April 7, 1863 from Lexington, KY by order of Brig. Genl. Wilcox.

David Neff was listed as 5'7"; age 54; grey eyes and grey hair with dark complexion.

He departed Camp Chase on April 10, 1863 for Fort Delaware.
