Former " Comrades-in-Arms " some of which rode with the legendary Nathan Bedford Forrest, posed for the photographer some 42 years after the guns were silenced
1861- 1865 | Arlington, Shelby County, Tennessee.
No longer the young volunteers of " 61 " but every bit as proud. A faint smile can be seen on the faces of a couple of the old rebels !!!! They are pictured left to right ( SEATED ) IMAGE # 2---- CAPTAIN RICHARD K GARRETT CO C 7 TH TN CAV. Capt Garrett's " PAROLE of HONOR " signed May 11, 1865 at the surrender of the last major Confederate Army east of the Mississippi. Commanded by Lt.Gen Richard Taylor, son of former President Zachary Taylor.
CONFEDERATE TENNESSEE TROOPS
12th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Green's)
12th Cavalry Regiment [also called 1st Partisan Rangers] was organized behind Federal lines in February, 1863. The men were from the counties of Fayette, Tipton, Shelby, Haywood, and Gibson. It served R.V. Richardson's and Rucker's Brigade, confronted the Federals in Tennessee and Mississippi, and in October totalled about 300 effectives. Later it was active in Georgia, fought at Memphis, then was part of Hood's operations in Tennessee. During February, 1865, the regiment was broken up. Some of its members became part of the 3rd (Forrest's Old) Tennessee Cavalry. The field officers were Colonels John U. Green and Robert V. Richardson, Lieutenant Colonel Reuben Burrow, and Majors G. W. Bennett and Berry B. Benson.

IMAGE # 4---- PVT. WILLIAM B. STEWERT ( RECORD SAYS " 1ST TENN. PARTISAN RANGERS ) captured 4-5-1863 sent to Alton Prison in Illinois. Exchanged 4-28-1863 ended the war in the 154th Tn. Inf.
IMAGE # 5---- PVT R.S. DONELSON CO. H 13TH TENN. INF. Enlisted at age 18, wounded at Missionary Ridge " took the oath " at Memphis, Tn. June 1865.
IMAGE # 6 MY ANCESTOR / RELATIVE PVT JAMES C. LAND ( standing on the left behind Capt. Garrett ) James began the war as a Private in Co. I 51st Tenn Inf. He also served with brothers William and Willis Land. He and my great, great, grandfather, David Land were distant cousins. Their great grandfathers were brothers. They were both great great grandsons of Thomas Land and Eleanor McClanahan ( my 6 x gr grandparents ) IMAGE # 9 James' brief record with the 51st Tn. Inf. shows he enlisted for one year 28 Mar, 1862 in Shelby County at the ripe old age of 16 yrs 5 mo. He was " discharged & paid " 5 Dec. 1862 later joined the 12th Tn Cavalry.
IMAGE # 7 PVT JOHN W. ZELLNER CO. E 13TH TN. INF. Captured Oct 1862 at Richmond, Ky. Held at Camp Chase, Ohio till exchanged. declared " unfit for field service " Sept 1863 and assigned to hospital duty at Dalton, Ga.
IMAGE # 8 PRIVATE JAMES S. WAYTT CO. A 38TH TN. INF. Enlisted at Camp Abington Sept.4,1861. James was in & out of hospitals most of the war due to poor health. Surrendered May 10, 1865 at Memphis, Tenn.
