Thomas J. Land was the 2nd oldest son of James Linville Land Sr. and Edith Livingston. Born abt. 1809 he was an older brother of my great-great grandfather David Land of Wilkes County, North Carolina. Thomas married Matilda Carlton on 30 Aug.1831.
1841- 1880 | Sequatchie County, in Southeast Tennessee.
Thomas left North Carolina with his wife and children, Elizabeth, William, Jesse, and Nancy in the late 1830's. The household is listed in the 1840 census of Marion ( later Sequatchie County,) Tennessee. Thomas died abt 1841. His grave stone in Anderson Cemetery Dunlap,Tennessee simply reads: " POISONED." A widowed Matilda and the children appear in the 1850 census. On Feb.19,1859 Matilda married Oliver Libby, a shoemaker from New England. The following July 7th Elizabeth married Abraham Pearl Wimberly who apparently liked to go by his middle name. While the Confederate CMSR for the two brothers and Pearl list them as " DESERTED " one should not jump to the conclusion that the 3 were cowards and deserted their comrades on the battlefield. Indeed, all 3 are listed as " on leave, " " sick at home." This was very common in the early years of the war in the North and South. Young men away from home for the first time caught every disease going !!!! More men North and South died from disease in the Civil War than battle wounds !!!! Apparently while they were home the area came under Union control. Like my home in the northeast corner of the state, their part of Tennessee was bitterly divided. They were probably warned by the Federals to " stay put !!! " Thus seperated from the rebels and no way to rejoin them they were listed as " deserted." Threatened with a trip north to a pow camp and his family's safety in question, William joined the Federals in March of 64 and had made Sgt Major by November. Following the war he filed for and recieved a Federal pension. Filing on August 12,1890. William died Dec.17,1907. His household in 1880 District 4, Sequatchie County,Tennessee :

In March, 1865, the regiment was turned over to the commander of the department, and was soon afterward placed under Gen. Judah, commanding at Decatur, Ga. where it continued its scouting until the surrender of the Confederate army. It was then ordered to Resaca. On June 18, 1865, it was ordered to Nashville and on the 30th of that month was mustered out. In a strange twist of history, William served in the 6th with a John P.
