A discharge certificate was one form of proof of service accepted by the US Pension Bureau. Cato Greene was fortunate in that unlike many veterans, he held onto his certificate, endorsed by George Washington, and used it to gain a pension.

Discharge Certificate of Cato Green signed by General George Washington

15 Jun 1783 | Washington, DC

Cato Greene's pension #S38753 contains his original discharge certificate issued on June 15, 1783 for service in a Rhode island regiment.  Greene died on September 10, 1826, in Providence at the approximate age of 102.
