My genealogical beginnings
ca. 1963 | Mount Gilead, Ohio
Lloyd Aden Benson is my grandpa, and was quite aged when I was a little boy. Because of his age, he seldom traveled over to see us, but I recall one time when he was in our home. My mother got out my baby book. Visiting with him, she filled in the family tree in green ink. I still remember the occasion even though I was quite young. I recall him trying to tell us where his grandfather, Didymus Benson, was buried. He said it was in a cornfield, but I have since discovered that it was the pauper burial grounds of the Morrow County Home at the north end of Sunfish Road. It is in fact surrounded by a cornfield today, with most graves there, including his grandfather's, unmarked.
This was the beginning of my genealogical interest that has flourished ever since.
He liked to hunt mushrooms (morrels), knew where asparagus grew along rural fence rows, and parched corn. He once turned a car around inside the covered bridge on Chambers Road, Delaware County, Ohio.
