Description
In 1841, Massachusetts required all towns to send birth, marriage, and death records to the state, while maintaining duplicate records at the town level. Indexes are arranged alphabetically by surname, providing an easy method for locating a particular record by listing the town where the event occurred, and the year, volume, and page for each record as it is archived at the state level. These earlier records are on microfilm at various repositories. Records after 1910 are available directly from the state.
