Grandpa loved his little grandaughter

| Glendora, Los Angeles, California

I was the first girl child born into the Mohr family in three generations, so I know first hand how much Grandpa loved his little grandaughter. We used to go fishing when I was a little girl and grandpa would have me go dig the worms.  When he and grandma lived in Forest Lake, Minnesota, we would go visit and I remember the rock fireplace they had.  When he knew I was coming, he would hide little "prizes" on the rocks and I would have to climb up to find them.  He would make dolls for me with vegetables (like Mr. Potatoe Head) because he did not have any toys for girls.  I remember him bouncing me on his knee and singing Froggie Courtin'.  We had such fun.  Then when I got older, and we lived in Glendora, he would say "Annie doesn't love me anymore" because I was no longer a little girl sitting on his knee.

Grandpa was the cook in the family but made weird things like liver dumplings and brains.  We didn't like to go to his house when he was fixing those things as they smelled bad.  He was a jolly old soul, short and fat like a real Santa type.  When he got older, though he got crotchety and I guess that comes from not feeling well.  I remember when he got skin cancer on his hand from burning it while cooking.  I think the skin cancer spread to his body as that is what he died from.  He died when I was in High School.  It was my first taste of death and it made me really sad to see him go.  Grandma really missed him as he was everything to her.
