My grandpa and me.

| Earlham, IA

My grandpa was a big strong man, a farmer. He was rough and tough and hard to beat. But, when I was a little girl (this is how they tell me) I took everything out of the lazy-susan and got in it! Now, grandpa, he told me the what for but I just looked up at this big tall man, the little pea that I was, I looked at him and said, "I know what I'm doing and you can't tell me what to do cause I know I'll be fine because I know what I'm doing."  and he hauled off and laughed. I can hear that big bear laugh in my mind right now. He thought that was so funny, a little thing like me standing up to a big ole guy like him. He couldn't bring himself to yell at me. And, that's my story.

Walking the fields.

| Earlham, IA

My grandma told me that my grandpa used to walk the fields just looking out at 'em and she said this because that's what I did and it reminded her of him. He would just walk and walk and look up at the clouds every once in awhile just to look. He even did this when he was an old man walking with a cane. He and that black cat Kipper used to just walk along the rows and take in the peacefulness.

Comments

My grandfather was a great man. A quiet, unless he had reason not to be, kind of guy. He was a hero in service and a loved husband and father at home.
