“Halter Rites To Be Monday At Melbourne

Services for Vena (Mrs. Henry) Halter, 92, Melbourne, who died Thursday at her home, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John’s United Church of Christ, the Rev. Mary Hendrickson in charge. Burial will be in the Melbourne Cemetery.

She was born Oct 15, 1891, at Cortland, Neb., the daughter of Fred and Nora Key Swaney James. She spent her early life and received her education in Beatrice, Neb.

She came to Melbourne in 1909 and was a telephone operator before her marriage to Henry Halter Feb. 4, 1914. She lived on a farm west of Melbourne until retiring to town in 1946.

She was a member of the Melbourne Christian Church and a life-time member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was treasurer for the CWF for 48 ears. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 161 and the Melbourne Pinochle Club.

Surviving are seven children, Mrs. Ruth Munn Welton, Melbourne, Doris (Mrs. Charles) Giles, West Des Moines; Lawrence Halter, Melbourne; Virginia (Mrs. Vernon) Hall, Marshalltown; Norma (Mrs. Richard) Graham, Mankato, Minn.; Marjorie (Mrs. Hugh) Davis, Marshalltown, and Merrill Halter, West Des Moines. There are 11 surviving grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968, a brother, a grandson, a great-grandson and a son-in-law.

The Ryan-Davis Funeral Home, Melbourne, is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund is being established.”
