In 1698, the capital of Virginia moved from Jamestown to Williamsburg and, in 1780, it moved again - this time to Richmond. Thomas Jefferson and the legislature had to flee Williamsburg to avoid invasion by the British during the Revolutionary War.
On 3 May 2007, Queen Elizabeth II visited Colonial Williamsburg.
