Rank and Organization: Gunner's Mate, U.S. Navy. Born: 1834, Savannah, Ga. Accredited To: Georgia. G.O. No.: 32, 16 April 1864.

CITATION:

Serving on board the U.S.S. Lehigh, Charleston Harbor, 16 November 1863, during the hazardous task, of freeing the Lehigh, which had grounded, and was under heavy enemy fire from Fort Moultrie. Rowing the small boat which was used in the hazardous task of transferring hawsers from the Lehigh to the Nahant, Leland twice succeeded in making the trip, only to find that each had been in vain when the hawsers were cut by enemy fire and chaffing.

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Union Navy. His citation reads "Served on board the USS Lehigh, Charleston Harbor, 16 November 1863, during the hazardous task of freeing the Lehigh, which had grounded and was under heavy enemy fire from Fort Moultrie. Rowing the small boat whih was used in the hazardous task of transferring hawsers from the Lehigh to the Nahant, Leland twice succeeded in making the trip, only to find that each had been in vain when the hawsers were cut by enemy fire and chaffing." (bio by: Don Morfe)

One day on board the Lehigh, Gunners Mate George Leland was transporting a stack of rifles. One of the guns went off, (apparently it was loaded) and he was hit in the vicinity of the throat. This occured after the incident at Fort Moultrie where he had earned his Medal of Honor. Following the war, he re-enlisted, and stayed in the Navy until 1868, when his ship visited Japan. Following his return home, he married a 19 year old named Georgiana. The couple had one child, Ada Maud Leland. Following his death several years later, Georgiana married a man named Richardson and the couple moved to San Francisco. There is a conflict in the records of George Leland's birth location. One record said that his birth town was Nashua, New Hampshire, while another said Savannah, Georgia. He was a resident of Boston, Massachusetts. Complications from the wound he received plagued him for the rest of his life, and he finally succumbed to it, and died several years later. As soon as I can, I will scan the copies into Footnote. I have a copy of his discharge. pension file and discharge dated 1868, and they are from the National Archives. This information is what I can recall at the moment.
