What cnholmes is doing on Footnote…

Elmer Sylvester Decker lived with memb ers of his mother's (Lois Ann Whitmarsh) in Iowa. He married but deserted his family in Iowa and moved to Nebraska where died in 1940. His father joined the Union Army and did not return although he was not killed. He evidently deserted but returned to his home town of Avoca married and raised a second son. It is not known where his mother or his younger brother Carl H Decker went or lived. ...more

Palmer Holmes, My 2nd GreatGrandfather. Born in Columbia Co, NY 1799. He migrated with others from New York in 1835 to Illinois where they established the town of Tremont in Tazewell Co. He was postmaster there for several years and for a short time, the probate judge.

This is a grand uncle of mine. He was supposed to have died in Nebraska in May 1892 according to his hometown newspaper in Toledo, Tama Co, Iowa. He was born in Funkstown, MD about 1825 and went west with my GreatGrandfather Hiram Reed in about 1856. He was a cooper as were most of the men in the Reed family. He was living in Des Moines sometime after the Civil War and before he moved to Nebraska ...more
