Annotation added: S/Sgt. Maynard H. Smith of Caro, Michigan, ball turret gunner on a Boeing B-17 is shown at his position on the plane during a mission from his base in England. Sgt. Smith received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his action on his first operational flight when he fought off an FW-190, fought a fire which had broken out in the plane, and gave first aid to a wounded tail gunner, all at the same time. He is a member of the 423rd Bomb Squadron, 306th Bomb Group.
