Cordial Respect Given

What is overlooked in this surrender is the respect garnered to the Confederate Army. General Grant esteemed General Lee so much that the incident was rather quiet and dignified. This surrender shows the hope that the North had for reunification.

It is interesting that in light of this that many people in the South continue to fly the Confederate flag (which, of course, is their right).
