Request by Laura Duval, Austin, to join unionist husband beyond lines
Laura's husband, federal judge Thomas H. Duval, had already fled Texas in Oct. 1863, hoping to impress Lincoln with a plan to end the war. He and his family returned to Texas in 1865, where he became a moderate Republican during Reconstruction.
